Je cherche à rentrer chez moi, et je prends un chemin que je ne connais pas, un petit sentier qui longe les usines et la ville en coupant par la forêt Je commence à peine à entrevoir la nature, lorsque tout d’un coup, la nuit tombe. Je suis plongée dans le noir et le silence. Pourtant, je n’ai pas peur. Je m’endors, quelques minutes tout au plus, et quand je me réveille, le soleil est là, et la forêt brille d’une lumière éclatant. Je reconnais cette forêt. Ce n’est pas une forêt ordinaire. C’est une forêt de souvenirs. Mes souvenirs. Cette rivière blanche et sonore, mon adolescence. Ces grands arbres, les hommes que j’ai aimés. Cet oiseau qui vole, au loin, mon père disparu. Mes souvenirs ne sont plus des souvenirs, ils sont là, vivants près de moil, ils dansent et m’enlacent, chantent et me sourient. Je regarde mes mains, je caresse mon visage, j’ai 20 ans, et j’aime comme je n’ai jamais aimé. 

It is late. I try to go home, and I take a path I do not know, a small path along the factories and the city by cutting through the forest. I am just beginning to glimpse nature, when suddenly, night falls. I plunged into darkness and silence. Yet I am not afraid. I fall asleep a few minutes at most, and when I wake up, the sun is there, and the forest shines a bright light. I recognize that forest. This is not an ordinary forest. It is a forest of memories. My memories. This river, white noise, my adolescence. These great trees, the men I loved. The bird that flies. away, my father disappeared. My memories are not memories, they are there, live near me!, They dance and embrace me, sing and smile at me. I look at my hands, I stroked my face, I’m 20 years old and I love like I never loved.

«Até aqui, os especialistas pensavam que o glioblastoma multiforme, o mais comum e agressivo cancro do cérebro nos seres humanos, tinha a sua origem nas células da glia, aquelas que asseguram a coesão do tecido cerebral. Mas agora, resultados obtidos pela equipa de Inder Verma, do Instituto Salk, EUA, vêm demonstrar algo de inesperado: que este tumor pode ser gerado por outros tipos de células nervosas — e nomeadamente pelos próprios neurónios —, quando elas regridem para um estado “infantil”. Os resultados, publicados esta sexta-feira na revista Science, permitem perceber o alto nível de reincidência deste cancro e sugerem novos alvos potenciais para o tratar, explica um comunicado daquela instituição californiana». O Prémio Nobel de Fisiologia ou Medicina de 2012 reconheceu o trabalho de dois investigadores, o britânico John Gurdon e o japonês Shinya Yamanaka, iniciado em 1962 pelo primeiro e complementado em 2006 pelo segundo, e que, muito sucintamente, esclarece que é possível reprogramar células maturas - já diferenciadas - em células estaminais, ou seja, pluripotentes, uma noção que sempre criou cépticos na comunidade científica. O que é que isto traz de relevante para a ciência? Muito claramente: o entendimento da diferenciação celular, o estudo do mecanismo de várias doenças e a expansão da medicina regenerativa, entre muitas outras áreas. Ler a notícia no Público aqui.  «The 2012 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine is awarded to Dr. John B. Gurdon and Dr. Shinya Yamanaka for their discovery that mature, differentiated cells can be reprogrammed to a pluripotent stem cell state. This represents a paradigm shift in our understanding of cellular differentiation and of the plasticity of the differentiated state. Cellular differentiation appears as a unidirectional process, where undifferentiated cells mature to various specialised cell fates, such as neurons, muscle and skin cells. The prevalent view during the first half of the 20 th century was that the mature cells were permanently locked into the differentiated state, and unable to return to a fully immature, pluripotent stem cell state. In 1962, John B. Gurdon radically changed this view by demonstrating that the nucleus from a differentiated frog intestinal epithelial cell was capable of generating a fully functional tadpole upon transplantation to an enucleated egg. This discovery shattered the dogma that cellular differentiation could only be a unidirectional process. Gurdon’s discovery was the starting point for cloning endeavours in various organisms. However, the question remained whether an intact differentiated cell could be fully reprogrammed to become pluripotent. In 2006, by an astonishingly simple procedure, Shinya Yamanaka proved that introduction of a small set of transcription factors into a differentiated cell was sufficient to revert the cell to a pluripotent state. The resulting cells were called induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Together, Gurdon and Yamanaka have transformed our understanding of cellular differentiation. They have demonstrated that the usually very stable differentiated state can be unlocked because it harbours a potential for reversion to pluripotency. This discovery has introduced fundamentally new research areas, and offers exciting new opportunities to study disease mechanisms.»
